Listening and Spoken Language at Home - Tele Intervention Benefits
What is a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist (LSLS Certification)?
The Alexander Graham Bell Academy offers the LSLS certification to qualified professionals who meet rigorous academic, professional, post-graduate education and mentoring requirements, and who pass the LSLS certification exam. LSLS certified professionals are licensed audiologists, speech-language pathologists or educators of the deaf who have voluntarily attained a high-level of specialty education and experience in listening and spoken language theory and practice.
Two LSLS designations are available:
LSLS Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist (LSLS Cert. AVT): Works one-on-one with children and families in all intervention sessions.
- Master’s degree in speech language pathology, audiology, or education of children who are D/HH
- 80 hours post-graduate study in Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) development
- 900 clock hours of provision of therapy in LSL
- 3 years of supervision by certified LSLS
- Passing score on international LSLS certification exam
LSLS Certified Auditory-Verbal Educator (LSLS Cert. AVEd): Works directly with children in individual, group or classroom settings
- Master’s degree in audiology, speech language pathology, or education of children who are D/HH
- 80 hours post-graduate study in Listening and Spoken Language development
- 500 hours over three three school years, directly teaching children with hearing loss in a LSL program
- Passing score on international LSLS certification exam
This is a growing specialty within the field of hearing health and education in response to a crisis of capacity that exists due to the fact that the number of families seeking a listening and spoken language outcome far exceeds the number of qualified professionals available to meet their needs.
